CITY GUIDE · NANJING
Where to stay in Nanjing: Xinjiekou and Gulou Square for the city center, Hexi for the new riverside business district, and Tangshan for a quiet resort stay outside town.
The hotels on our list fall into three groups. Xinjiekou and Gulou Square are the traditional city center, with Zifeng Tower, Deji Plaza and views toward Xuanwu Lake and Purple Mountain, and they suit first-time visitors who want to be in the middle of things. Hexi is the newer business district west of the old center, where the Andaz and Fairmont sit in large towers near the Yangtze River and the Nanjing International Expo Centre. Tangshan, in Jiangning District, is a different kind of stay altogether: the Banyan Tree is a resort away from the city, so we would pair it with a car or driver rather than plan to walk anywhere.
Reference rates: nightly, 2 adults in one room, before tax, across four dates a year; from about US$92 a night. Compare all Nanjing hotels with perks in one table: Nanjing reference rates.
