Five lake and hillside palace hotels around Udaipur, from an island palace on Lake Pichola to a private island on Udaisagar Lake.
Most of these hotels sit on or beside Lake Pichola, where the City Palace is the main landmark. Taj Lake Palace is on its own island in the lake, while The Oberoi Udaivilas and The Leela Palace Udaipur are on the Pichola shoreline. The Fairmont is set in the Aravalli Hills on the Sisarma side of town, minutes from the city centre. Raffles Udaipur is on a different body of water, Udaisagar Lake, so plan on a longer transfer if you want to be at the old city every day. Choose the Pichola hotels for sightseeing on foot or by boat, and the Fairmont or Raffles for more space and resort facilities.

A good fit for travelers who want a self-contained island stay and are happy to transfer into the old city.

Lake Pichola · near City Palace (across the lake)
The Oberoi Udaivilas spreads over 30 acres of gardens on Lake Pichola, with the City Palace directly across the water and the city centre about 8 km away. Many rooms and suites have private or semi-private pools, butler service is included in all rooms, and a private boat crosses the lake. Mewar by Vineet serves Indian cuisine, and Asmi by Oberoi is the spa. A good fit for travelers who want large grounds and pools rather than a compact city hotel.

Jag Niwas island, Lake Pichola · near City Palace
Taj Lake Palace is a white marble palace on the island of Jag Niwas in Lake Pichola, built to look as if it floats on the water. Courtyards, fountains and pillared terraces surround a lily pond, and staff known as Royal Butlers look after guests. The palace has appeared in the films The Tiger of Eschnapur and Octopussy. A good fit for first-time visitors who want the classic Udaipur image from their own window.

Sisarma, Aravalli Hills · near Lake Pichola and the City Palace · 327 rooms
We find this one on Seesarma Road in the Aravalli Hills, described as minutes from the city centre and about 45 minutes by road from the airport.
